Physical education is an integral part of the Heschel curriculum. Students not only learn athletic skills, but also develop lifelong habits, leadership skills, and resilience.
Our athletic programs give students the opportunity to demonstrate teamwork and sportsmanship and stress playing with kavod (honor): self-esteem, respect for others, and fair play. Heschel has a proud history of participation in the San Fernando Valley Private School League.  The Heschel Hawkeyes have won many championships, as evidenced by the more than 50 championship banners that decorate the perimeter of de Toledo Pavilion.

Each year many male and female athletes make the commitment required to continue this tradition. We recognize that many of the traits and skills necessary for athletic success—commitment, teamwork, communication, perseverance—also are fundamental for success in life and further acknowledge that students often develop important aspects of their leadership abilities on the playing field. Our emphasis is on the team experience, skill development, fair play, and healthy competition. As students collaborate with teammates, negotiate substantive relationships, and learn to appreciate the contributions of others for the greater good, student athletes learn how to make difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions in furtherance of the benefit of the team. On the athletic field, these skills are useful; for navigating interpersonal relationships throughout a lifetime, they are essential.
