Beyond the Classroom: Experiential Learning Journey
At Heschel, we understand that for education to be transformational, students’ learning must extend beyond traditional classroom boundaries. Through our immersive experiential education programming, we provide students with developmentally-appropriate trips that cultivate independence, resilience, and lead to profound personal growth. Through carefully designed experiential programs, students develop essential life skills while applying their academic knowledge to real-world situations. These transformative journeys allow students to embrace challenges, discover their capabilities, and truly live their education in meaningful ways.
The 6th Grade El Capitan Adventure offers a transformative three-day outdoor educational experience along the stunning California coastline north of Santa Barbara. Under the guidance of the experienced Naturalists at Large Institute staff, students engage in environmental exploration and personal development activities designed to foster environmental consciousness, leadership skills, and group cooperation. Through hands-on experiences and community living in rustic cabins, students integrate academic learning with Jewish values while developing a deeper connection to our natural world and each other.
The 7th Grade Washington D.C. Journey immerses students in our nation's rich heritage through an enlightening five-day exploration of the capital's most significant historical sites and cultural institutions. During the trip, students will explore iconic landmarks including the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, bringing history to life through direct experience. Through guided exploration and thoughtful reflection, students deepen their understanding of American democracy while developing independence and cultural awareness. The program provides students the space to authentically integrate their academic curriculum with their Jewish values, while reflecting on their place in the chain of American Jewish life.
The 8th Grade Israel Experience represents the culmination of our students' middle school journey, embodying our commitment to nurturing empowered individuals dedicated to Jewish values and Israel's vitality. This profound journey takes students across Israel's diverse landscape, from spiritual moments of prayer at the Kotel to the dynamic energy of modern Tel Aviv. Through meaningful engagement with Israel's land, people, and culture, students strengthen their connection to their Jewish identity. This trip serves as the pivotal moment for our students to reflect upon their learning at Heschel and begin to understand how their Jewish values and commitment to Israel will be part of their life beyond Heschel.
