Elementary School Student Council fulfills an important role in the life of the school. Participation includes:
· developing leadership skills and awareness of group dynamics
· involving students in the democratic processes such as voting, nominating, inaugurating, and parliamentary procedures
· providing an organization that represents the student body and produces results
· communicating the ideas and suggestions of all students
· planning activities and performing various duties for the school
Each First through Fifth grade class selects Student Council members to represent their grade level on the Student Council. Students meet weekly to discuss pertinent issues and to plan activities. Past activities have included a toy drive and the collection of cell phones and other electronic devices for donation. They also take responsibility for hallway traffic and institute safety measures in the Elementary School.
The Middle School Student Council conducts assemblies and town hall meetings, proposes and sponsors dances and activities, and sponsor programs that contribute to our school environment. When students initiate a project and see it through to its completion, an immense sense of satisfaction and personal accomplishment results.
Student Council participation extends the leadership skills introduced in elementary grades. Students elect representatives from each grade level who meet weekly to plan, discuss, evaluate, and implement student suggestions in a democratic manner. Every effort is made to support a student’s desire to run for Student Council office. Candidates hang campaign posters during the final weeks of each semester, and present brief campaign speeches to their peers. To help voters make well-informed choices, candidates for president are required to provide an impromptu (on-the-spot) response to a relevant school question during the assembly. This time-honored school tradition is always grounded in respect, good taste, and good judgment in all aspects of the election.
