Physical Education is an integral part of the Heschel curriculum. Students not only learn athletic skills, but also develop lifetime habits and interests. An important goal is to develop an appreciation for fitness, along with a repertoire of enjoyable lifetime fitness activities including flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, strength development, and neuromuscular skills. The Physical Education program promotes sports with kavod (honor): self esteem, respect for others, leadership, and fair play.
Athletic skills and proper form are stressed in all grades through drills and team play. As students progress through the middle school, emphasis shifts to game rules and strategy through team and tournament play. Students also learn and apply referee skills and implement strategies.
A specialized dual program has been put in place to meet the needs and interests of all middle school students. The core group of students not involved in the after school team sports program maintains a vigorous physical fitness and sports skills program with activities designed to challenge and develop creativity. For those who participate in the many competitive sports teams that we offer, a portion of the Physical Education instructional time is designated for team practices.
