The Visual Arts Program aims to develop an informed appreciation of art and a life-long interest in and love for the subject. The Visual Arts program is built around four essential components: aesthetic perception, creative expression, art heritage, and aesthetic valuing. Materials such as ceramic clay, paint, charcoal, wire, papier-mâché, wood, pen and ink, and printing blocks are used in required courses and exploratories (middle school).
Science, mathematics, history, and Judaic studies are integrated into our projects to motivate and challenge students. Emphasis is on process and the development of a student’s own style and self-confidence.
In elementary school, we employ a spiraling curriculum; at every grade level students will explore painting, drawing, and ceramics, increasing their skills and aptitude. Art appreciate is forefront as a different famous artist is studied every month, exposing students to the wide variety of styles and definitions of “art”. Students begin visiting the art room is second grade, before that art is incorporated within the classroom in a variety of ways.
In grade six, a one-trimester art course meets twice a week. Sixth, seventh and eighth grades are permitted to chose exploratories in art that vary according to student interest. Exploratory classes offer stained glass, drawing and painting from observation, ceramics, multi-media collage and assemblage, and printmaking. (Self-expression and imagination are always encouraged.)
Through the knowledge of artists, art history, and educated critique, our students' successful, creative experiences result in positive attitudes towards themselves, their culture, and their environment.
Musical Theater emphasizes group dynamics, stagecraft, and the use of dance, movement, and song as means of dramatic expression. Students audition for acceptance into this class and for specific roles. This year, our musical production will be performed at the close of the second trimester. Participation in Musical Theater requires after school and Sunday rehearsal time.
“Exploratories” provide students in grades 6, 7, and 8 an opportunity to experience a new activity that may become a lifelong interest or hobby. Exploratory courses complement the challenging academic program with offerings in visual and performing arts, speech and debate, sports, cooking, film criticism, and other arenas. The goal is to give each student an opportunity to expand his or her horizons, enjoy success, and find a niche among like-minded students.
