Financial Assistance

NEED BASED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Financial assistance enables Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School to enroll qualified students who might not otherwise have access to an independent school education and to assist current Heschel students whose families have had a change or reversal in financial circumstances. We have long been committed to a diverse student body reflecting a broad economic mix. Financial assistance is based on financial need. This need is established through analysis of the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) of the School and Student Services for Financial Aid (SSS).

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE PROCESS

CONFIDENTIALITY

Philosophically, Heschel is opposed to any practice which publicly identifies recipients of aid or distinguishes them from others. Financial information submitted by parent or guardian is treated with strict confidence by those whose responsibilities require them to have financial assistance information.

DURATION AND COMMITMENT

A financial assistance award is granted for one year. A family is required to furnish information regarding their current financial situation each year so that the Financial Assistance Committee can conduct a review and make whatever adjustment in financial assistance is necessitated by the changes in those circumstances and the available funds. Every attempt is made to meet the demonstrated needs for financial assistance of returning students from year to year.

PARENTAL RESPONSIBILITY

As a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), Heschel strongly believes that the primary financial responsibility for a child’s education rests with the parents. Assistance is based on a family’s ability to meet educational expenses, not willingness or unwillingness to pay.

It is the position of Heschel that divorced or separated parents retain the obligation to contribute to the education of their children whether or not there is legal agreement between them to do so. Some divorce settlements stipulate the exact amount each parent must contribute toward educational expenses. Because Heschel’s interests and policies were not represented when the settlement was made, we are not bound by such guidelines and instead require both parents to contribute as much as our calculations show they can afford.
